TO OPTIMIZE FOR A NEW LASER PRINTER

If you have purchased one of the new laserwriters, and have downloaded this file for compatibility reasons, you may have to do a couple of things before KE3 prints on the correct side. When you first open the updated version of KiwiENVELOPES! you should see a message saying "Printer verification in progress..." If this message does not appear, do not try to print, but, while holding down the Command and Option keys, click on the Close box of KE3. When you re-open, the verification should take place, and the utility should then print the envelope correctly.

HARDWARE: SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

****H-P 4m****
KiwiENVELOPES! has been optimized to work with the 4m using the factory settings. The one setting that should not be changed is in the Config Menu. There, the setting should be 'MP Tray = Cass.' Any other setting will cause the address to print on a piece of paper from the lower cassette.
H-P 4M printer driver 2.1.2 and their version of the new level 2 vs. 8.0 driver do not respond as laserwriters when queried by KiwiENVELOPES! LaserJet 4M driver 2.2 is completely compatible, however.
Envelopes (up to 15) may be left in the MP Tray. They should be placed 180° from the embossed icon (which is there for PCL users, only) on the printer. They should have the flap facing down and toward the adjustable guide. Slide the adjustable paper guide toward the left to hold them. Pressing the Print button in KiwiENVELOPES! will automatically take the next item in the MP Tray.
****Apple StyleWriter II****
Make sure both tabs are set for envelope, rather than paper.
Insert the envelope (or several envelopes in the printer short side first (perpendicular to the way Apple instructs you to do it), with the flap down and toward the adjustable guide.
****Apple LaserWriter Select 300/310 printers****
These printers have only guidelines (rather than adjustable guides) for placing the envelope. This can cause variations in the placement of the items in the address. Rather than disabling the bar codes because we cannot guarantee that they will always print in the proper area, however, we have left them enabled with the quality determination up to the customer. The envelopes should be positioned carefully in the center of the tray, face down (flap up) and with the flap toward the left side of the machine.
****Apple LaserWriter Pro 600/630 printers****
Place the envelope in the multi-purpose tray on the left side with the flap down and toward the adjustable paper guide. To hold the envelope in place, slide the guide to the left to rest against the envelope. Up to 10 envelopes may be placed in the tray.

LASERWRITER 8.0

The new LaserWriter Driver does not appear to accept a software-generated manual feed command as have the prior drivers up through version 7.2. If an envelope is _already_ in the manual feed tray or the multi-purpose tray, it has a chance of printing (sometimes pulling a piece of paper through with it). This might possibly be changed by either a later version of the driver or KiwiENVELOPES!® itself. With LaserWriter 8.0's use of PPD's to show all the printing options for a particular printer, the entire character of the driver has drastically changed. To ensure working with this driver, hold down the Option key when pressing the Print button. Click on the OK box in the Page Setup dialog (don't change anything there). In the Print dialog, choose either Manual Feed or Multi-purpose Tray. This has to be done each time.

SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY ISSUES

**** ORANGE MICRO'S GRAPPLER ****
KiwiENVELOPES! does not support Orange Micro's Grappler Printer interface.
**** LASERWRITER AND OLD VERSION OF SUPERPAINT ****
A picture created in SuperPaint 2.0 which contains text will never print using LaserWriter. Consequently, if you create a return address logo in Superpaint and paste it into KiwiENVELOPES! , KE will not print when using the LaserWriter driver version 6.0. This problem was fixed by SuperPaint version 2.0a.
**** OLD VERSIONS OF WRITENOW ****
Earlier versions of WriteNow do not consistently copy and paste to desk accessories. For best results, make sure you use WriteNow version 2.2 or better.
**** INITS/CDEVS ****
Older versions of Boomerang, Coach Help, HigherMenus, HierDA, and LaserSpeed have been reported to present incompatibility problems under certain circumstances.
